DISCOVER VITASSIUM

Overview

Specifically formulated to support people living with chronic illness, Vitassium provides sodium and potassium to help manage symptoms of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Vasovagal Syncope, and other chronic conditions.  Often, boosting electrolytes can ease common symptoms of these conditions, such as lightheadedness and fatigue, by increasing blood volume.   Vitassium products are designed to be kind to sensitive stomachs, and they do not contain any of the top 8 food allergens*, preservatives, artificial dyes, or GMO ingredients. Depending on what’s best for you, Vitassium is available in:

  • Salt capsules that contain 250mg of sodium per capsule
  • Chewable flavored tablets (“FastChews”) provide 125mg of sodium per 2-tablet serving
  • Ready-to-mix powder (“DrinkMix”) that adds a 500 mg boost of sodium to any drink

Unlike most other electrolyte options, Vitassium is classified as a medical food, meaning it is formulated for the specific dietary management of certain diseases or conditions that can benefit from increased salt intake. Vitassium does not require a prescription, but you should consume Vitassium under the guidance of your doctor, who can help you determine how much extra salt and fluid intake is right for you.   *Vitassium products do not contain any of the 8 FDA-identified allergens, including wheat, soy, milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, tree nuts, or peanuts. FastChews contain stevia, which may conflict with certain food sensitivities. If you are sensitive to stevia, we suggest Vitassium Capsules as an alternative.

Detailed Usage Guide

Unlike most other electrolyte options, Vitassium is classified as a medical food, meaning it is formulated for the specific dietary management of certain diseases or conditions that can benefit from increased salt intake. Vitassium does not require a prescription, but you should take Vitassium under the guidance of your doctor, who can help you determine how much extra salt and fluid intake is right for you.

Remember that “salt,” which often represents NaCl (or sodium chloride), and “sodium” are not the same thing. It’s important for your doctor to clarify whether their recommendation is for salt intake or sodium intake – then you can use the following chart to find out how much Vitassium could be best for you.

For example, if your doctor suggests taking an extra 2.5 g (2,500 mg) salt per day, that would equal around 4 Vitassium capsules, 16 FastChews, or 2 servings of DrinkMix. On the other hand, if they recommend taking an extra 2.5 g (2,500 mg) of sodium per day, that would equal 10 capsules, 40 FastChews, or 5 servings of DrinkMix. It’s important to clarify the difference!

3. My doctor told me to take salt tablets. Does that mean just salt?
“Salt” usually refers to table salt, which is chemically known as Sodium Chloride. By weight, sodium chloride contains about 40% sodium. Nutrition information on foods is always indicated as the mineral sodium. For example, 1 gram of salt (1,000 milligrams) contains 400 mg of sodium. If your physician suggests taking 1 g of salt, then you can consume either 1 g of table salt, or 400 mg of sodium as indicated on food labels. Vitassium capsules contain 250 mg of sodium per capsule, or 500 mg sodium per 2-capsule serving. This equals 635 mg salt per capsule or 1270 mg salt per 2 capsule serving.

Vitassium FastChews contain 125 mg of sodium per 2-tablet serving, and each serving of Vitassium DrinkMix contains 500 mg of sodium. Refer to our chart below for more information.

4. I thought sodium was the only thing I needed to increase.  Why do I need the potassium?

Vitassium contains potassium to assist in regulating the balance of water between plasma (blood) and within the cell.

In scientific terms, potassium is critical in the body for a variety of biochemical processes. One important function of potassium is to regulate the balance of water between plasma (blood) and within the cell. Providing sufficient building blocks for the body to self-regulate can be important. Vitassium contains an appropriate amount of potassium to assist in that regard. In general, excess potassium is excreted in the urine.

5. What about fluid intake?

Increasing fluid intake is necessary to maximize the benefits of higher salt intake. Most experts recommend consuming 2-3 liters of hydrating fluids per day. Everyone is different, so ask your doctor how much salt and fluid intake is right for you.

6. Vitassium is expensive. Are there any discounts or cheaper options?

We recognize that financial challenges can accompany chronic illness, and we do everything we can to keep costs low while maintaining our high standards of service and supply. We know you can't make compromises when it comes to your health, so we don't either.

Vitassium is actually less expensive than most options on the market, when measured by price/100 mg of sodium. Additionally, anyone who uses Vitassium to help manage a chronic illness can join the Vitassium Club to receive 25% off, as well as free shipping for orders over $50. Apply to the Vitassium Club today.

Unlike salt tablets that can cause irritation to the stomach, or electrolyte drinks that contain high amounts of sugar, Vitassium is designed to be kind to sensitive stomachs.

8. Is this a supplement?

Not quite. Unlike most other electrolyte options, Vitassium is classified as a medical food, meaning it is formulated for the specific dietary management of certain diseases or conditions that can benefit from increased salt intake. For more information on medical foods, check out the FDA website.

9. Is Vitassium a drug? Do I need a prescription to purchase Vitassium?

Vitassium does not require a prescription, but you should consume Vitassium under the guidance of your doctor, who can help you determine how much extra salt and fluid intake is right for you.

10. Will my insurance cover Vitassium? Is Vitassium purchase allowed under my FSA account?

Vitassium Capsules
1. What are the ingredients in Vitassium capsules?
Vitassium capsules contain sodium chloride, potassium citrate, vegetarian stearic acid and hypromellose (vegetable capsule).

2. Are Vitassium capsules the same size as SaltStick Caps?
No. Vitassium capsules are smaller size “0” that are easier to consume than the larger SaltStick Caps size “00” capsules. Both products should be consumed with water.

3. What type of allergens are present in Vitassium capsules? Is there corn, soy, etc.?
Vitassium capsules are non-GMO, vegan, gluten free, preservative free, allergen free, soy free, and starch free.

4. Why do Vitassium capsules contain vegetarian stearic acid? Is that safe?
Stearic acid is used as a solid lubricant that’s helpful during the encapsulation process. It is on the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list in the USA that has been used safely for many years in many products. In fact, chocolate contains a large amount of stearic acid naturally, as do other food products. It is present in a very small quantity in Vitassium. It is specifically sourced from a vegetarian source.

5. Are the vegetable capsules really made from vegetables?
Hypromellose is a solid, non-toxic cellulose material derived from plants (wood/cotton fiber). There is no starch or corn present. Hypromellose is suitable for those following vegan and vegetarian diets.

6. How many Vitassium capsules should I take?
As a medical food, you should follow your physician’s recommendations. In general, take one to two (1-2) capsules with water, three to four (3-4) times a day, for up to ten (10) capsules daily. Do not exceed the recommended dose unless advised by your physician. Consult a physician before using this product, especially if you are a pregnant or nursing mother, a child under 18, or an individual with a known medical condition. Individuals with hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency, diabetes, or those on a low potassium or low-salt diet should not use this product without physician guidance.

7. How should Vitassium capsules be stored?
Store Vitassium capsules in a cool (room temperature or below) and dry environment.

8. Is it standard for “salt tablets” to contain other electrolytes?
“Salt” tablets usually contain only sodium chloride, which is often referred to as table salt. The salt is commonly mined or harvested from salt water, and then purified. Trace quantities of other minerals, such as potassium, manganese, zinc and others can be found in natural sources of salt, but the quantities are so small that in the context of a normal diet, they are not necessarily helpful. Vitassium contains purified sodium chloride (salt) that is 99.9% pure. Vitassium also contains significant amounts of potassium, that helps balance the electrolyte content in the body, between plasma and inside cells. Most salt tablets do not contain potassium.

Vitassium FastChews
1. What are the ingredients in Vitassium FastChews?
Vitassium FastChews contain sodium citrate, potassium citrate, dextrates, dextrose, citric acid, stearic acid, natural flavors, crospovidone, silica, magnesium stearate, Reb A (stevia extract).

2. What type of allergens are present in Vitassium FastChews?
Vitassium FastChews are non-GMO, vegan, gluten free, and soy free. FastChews do not contain any of the 8 FDA-identified allergens, including wheat, soy, dairy, eggs, shellfish, fish, tree nuts, or peanuts. They do contain stevia, which may conflict with certain food sensitivities. If you have a hard time tolerating stevia, we suggest Vitassium Capsules as an alternative.

3. How many Vitassium FastChews should I take?
As a medical food, you should follow your physician’s recommendations. In general, take one to two (1-2) FastChews with water, throughout the day as needed, for up to forty (40) tablets daily.

4. Can FastChews be dissolved in water to create a sports drink?
We don’t recommend it. It’s technically possible, but we designed Vitassium FastChews to be eaten directly, so they aren’t very soluble in water.

5. How should FastChews be stored?
Unopened packets or bottles of FastChews should be stored at room temperature and under dry conditions for the longest shelf life. Opened packets and bottles should be kept sealed and used as soon as practical.

6. Do I need to take FastChews with water?
FastChews can be consumed with or without water, depending on personal preference and circumstances. You will still need some source of hydration over time, but you can drink when you need fluid, and take FastChews when you need electrolytes.

7. Can I suck on FastChews or do I need to chew and swallow?
Yes. You will absorb electrolytes quickly through buccal tissue (inside your mouth, under your tongue) so if you prefer, you can keep FastChews in your mouth until they dissolve fully. We recommend that you wait 5-10 minutes before drinking water to maximize the effectiveness of FastChews.

8. Is there color added?
We do not add color to FastChews.

9. Are FastChews suitable for children?
Yes. FastChews have been formulated to be safe for children when used under parental and under the guidance of a physician. FastChews, when paired with water, provide a convenient and healthy alternative to sports drinks, which often contain high amounts of sugar and artificial coloring. **We recommend consulting with your child’s physician for recommended dosing guidance.

10. My FastChews show some brown spots of discoloration. What’s wrong?
With humidity and in warmer conditions, the ingredients in FastChews (sugars and amino acids) can react via the Maillard reaction to create white and brown spots. This is similar to the reaction that gives browned foods their flavor (e.g. coffee roasting or toasting bread). It’s harmless and while visually unappealing, does not affect the performance or safety of FastChews. We suggest keeping the unused product in cool and dry conditions to avoid discoloration.

DrinkMix contains sodium citrate, dextrose, natural flavors, citric acid, potassium citrate, silicon dioxide, beet root powder and Reb A (stevia extract)

7. What sweetener is used in DrinkMix?
We use Reb A (Stevia Extract) to sweeten our drink mix. It’s a natural sweetener made from a non-GMO source.

8. Can I mix DrinkMix with other Vitassium products like Capsules and FastChews?
Absolutely! Every Vitassium product follows the same specifically formulated guidelines to provide sodium and potassium to help maintain electrolyte levels, to support healthy blood pressure, and to reduce fatigue and dizziness due to low blood pressure. Whether you consume Capsules, FastChews or DrinkMix, you’ll be getting the same balance of sodium and potassium. Just make sure you’re tracking your overall sodium consumption relative to water intake to help avoid overdoing it.

9. Can I mix my DrinkMix with water and save for later?
While you can certainly prepare your DrinkMix in advance we recommend consuming it as soon as possible, preferably in a day or two but no later than a week if kept refrigerated. Shake well before use.
